It may seem like this is a winter article, but let’s face it, we live in England. Cold weather can creep up on us at any time of the year. If you are sick of pulling on jumpers and woolly socks to keep warm in your own home, its time you made some changes!
Insulating your home is important, but we understand that it can be pricey at times. So, rather than telling you to fork out thousands for a new boiler or new triple-glazed windows, we’re going to share some simpler and cost-effective tips for insulating your home.
Invest In High-Quality Fitted Shutters
And we’re going to start with shutters, obviously! Shutters are not only a beautiful window dressing that exudes style and luxury, but they also happen to be extremely insulating. Bespoke, fitted shutters will prevent heat from escaping when they are closed. Plus, they will stop draughts from entering your home through your windows.

Switch To A Smart Thermostat
Smart thermostats are hugely popular these days, and rightfully so. After all, what’s better than coming home to a lovely, warm home?
The majority of smart thermostats work in a similar way. Basically, these clever thermostats enable you to set a timer so that your heating comes on at a specific time during the day.
The Smart Thermostat can be set to have your heating on for a certain amount of time, for example, for one hour. Plus, you can set it so that once your home is lovely and toasty, the smart thermostat will switch your heating off. Better still, if your home is already warm, the smart thermostat will not switch the heating on. So, it saves you money too!
Exclude Draughts
You may not realise it, but even the smallest of draughts can prevent your home from heating up. Draught excluders are cheap enough to buy and can make a huge difference when it comes to insulating your home. Simply pop them at the bottom of the doors in your main living areas to block out any draughts that may be creeping in. You can also buy Weather Strips, to seal windows, doors and loft doors without having to spend an arm and a leg.
Also, always shut doors on rooms that aren’t used. For example, if you have a spare bedroom or a downstairs toilet that isn’t used very often, keep the doors closed. Similarly, if your windows have air vents, ensure they’re kept closed. If you have pets, you should also check the pet flaps to ensure cold draughts aren’t sneaking in. If they are, you may need to replace your pet flap with a draught proof one.
Add Thermal Curtains Or Blinds
Like shutters, made-to-measure blinds and thermal curtains also go a long way in insulating your home. However, make sure your curtains do not cover your radiators, as this can block the heat. Also, if you are investing in blinds, ensure they fit your windows correctly, otherwise, they will let heat escape.
Add Area Rugs
Hardwood flooring and tiles may look sleek, but they’re not the warmest of floors. In fact, there isn’t much worse than walking barefoot on tiled flooring in the middle of winter! Keep your home (and your feet) warm by using area rugs.
A stylish rug that will complement the décor and warm up the room. Perhaps add a soft, fluffy rug to the lounge area and bedroom. Whereas nylon rugs are ideal for the kitchen and dining areas.
Bleed The Radiators
Bleeding the radiators is one of those jobs that we keep telling ourselves we need to do, but we never quite get round to it. However, bleeding the radiator can be really important when it comes to insulating your home! Bleeding the radiators means releasing air that has become trapped inside the radiators. If your radiators have cold spots when the heating is switched on, or if they are gurgling, it usually means they need bleeding.
Another tip is to avoid putting furniture, such as your sofa, in front of your radiators as this will block the heat and prevent the room from warming up.
Use Radiator Panels
Radiator panels offer a great way to insulate your home. They speed up the time in which a room heats up once the radiators come on whilst reducing heat loss through walls. As well as insulating your home, radiator panels will help you save on heating costs. Radiator panels come in different shapes and sizes and most are self-adhesive for quick fitting.
