Plantation shutters are an extremely versatile window dressing. Whether you have a modern property or a period property, a contemporary design scheme or a traditional design scheme; shutters will look amazing.
Choosing the right plantation shutters for your home tends to come down to personal preference and requirements. For example, full height shutters look excellent in every single room in the home, from the bathroom to the lounge. But you may prefer the look of café style shutters.
To choose the best style of plantation shutters for your home, you must first understand the styles available to you. In this blog, we outline the various styles of plantation shutters and what they are suitable for.
Types Of Plantation Shutters
There are several types of plantation shutters available. Some of which are more versatile than others.
Full Height Shutters
Full height shutters cover the entirety of the window and can be fully opened, fully closed, or the slats can be tiled. These versatile shutters allow you to control the light and privacy levels in your home. You can choose from various slat sizes and colours.
Suitable for: Full Height Shutters are suitable for every room in the home, regardless of style or interior décor. Whether your windows are short, shaped or fitted within a bay, full height shutters will look great.
Tier On Tier Shutters
Tier on Tier shutters offer all the benefits of full height shutters. The difference is, they have two separate panel rails, one above the other. The two panels can be open and closed separately from each other. So, you could have the bottom shutter panel closed to maintain privacy whilst keeping the top shutter panel open to let the natural light in. Plus, the louvres can be tilted.
Suitable for: Tier on tier shutters are popular in every room in the home. However, they are better suited to taller windows. If your windows are short, tier on tier shutters may not be ideal for you.
Café Style Shutters
Café style shutters are unlike any other type of plantation shutters as they only cover the lower half of the window. This chic and stylish window dressing looks great alone or paired with curtains.
Suitable for: If the top of your window is patterned or has stained glass, you may want to opt for Café Style Shutters to show it off. Alternatively, if you’re home is dark and in need of natural light, café style shutters will allow the light to flood in. They are popular in living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms. Café style shutters don’t tend to be suitable for bedrooms as they let in too much light.
Blackout Shutters
Shutters are not usually the window dressing people go for when they want total blackout. Until Blackout Shutters made an appearance! Fitted with a blind that fits snugly in their own built-in channel behind the shutter panel, these plantation shutters offer complete blackout.
Suitable For: Blackout shutters are excellent for the bedroom!
Tracked Shutters
Tracked shutters are full height shutters that are sat within a track – making them ideal for bi-folding doors, patio doors and French doors. They can also be used as room separators.
Solid Panel Shutters
Unlike other shutters, solid panel shutters don’t have slats or louvres. They provide almost complete blackout when closed and are often used in tier-on-tier form.
Suitable For: Solid panel shutters look amazing in a period home, or a home with a traditional decor.
Waterproof Shutters
Most styles of plantation shutters are available in a high-grade waterproof plastic. They look just like their wooden and faux wooden counterparts, only they won’t be damaged by water or humidity.
Suitable For: Waterproof shutters are perfect for kitchens and bathrooms.
