Shutters are a fantastic window dressing with a range of benefits. They add a touch of style and elegance to your home whilst allowing you to seamlessly manage light control and privacy. However, when it comes to selecting the best product for your needs, it can be a little confusing, particularly when choosing the correct slat size for your shutters – should you select one of the more popular choices, 63mm or 76mm shutters? Or would something else be more appropriate for your needs?
Luckily for you, we are shutter experts. And we're going to make it easy for you to choose the right louvre size for your shutters.
Factors To Consider When Choosing The Correct Slat Size For Your Shutters
When choosing shutter slat sizes, there are a number of factors you need to take into consideration. These include practical requirements such as window size, window style, light and privacy control, tilt rods, as well as personal preference and home décor.
Window shutters have several panels (with the exception of Solid Panel Shutters) and each panel features a run of horizontal slats. Slats are also often referred to as louvres, and the two terms can be used interchangeably. They come in different louvre sizes, so it can be puzzling to know the perfect louvre size for your window shutters. Here's what to keep in mind as you make your decision…
Window Sizes
The size of your windows plays a big part in the size of your shutter slats. You should consider both the length of your windows and the depth. If your windows are not very deep, there may not be enough room for shutters with large louvres to operate seamlessly.
With the above in mind, if you have small windows, small slat sizes will work far better. For large windows with deeper recesses, wider louvres will be ideal.
Home Décor
Shutters are such a popular choice because they complement every type of home décor. Whether you are going for a contemporary and minimalistic theme, a rustic farmhouse theme or a Scandinavian chic theme, there will be shutters to suit the interior décor of your living space.
Larger louvres (76 mm slats, as above) tend to be our most popular size, possibly because they suit almost every home and blend beautifully with a variety of home decors.
However, we offer different slat sizes and the louvre width you opt for is completely up to you and your personal taste!
Light And Privacy Control
The beauty of window shutters lies is the versatility they offer. Whether they are in the bedroom, lounge, dining room or kitchen, shutters enable you to effortlessly alter the light levels and privacy in your home.
All sizes of shutter slats offer complete privacy when closed and enable you to easily control privacy levels. However, larger slats tend to let in more light compared to smaller slats as they feature larger gaps between each slat. If you have a small room that requires a lot of natural daylight, you may want to opt for larger slat sizes.
Similarly, if you are going for a dark shutter, the dark shade will not reflect the light as well as a white shutter, so large slats letting in plenty of natural light will add a touch of balance.
On the other hand, if your privacy needs are of greater importance to you than light levels, you may wish to consider smaller louvres, which provide tighter closure, smaller gaps, and therefore maximum privacy.
Window Style
The style of shutter and size of shutter slat you opt for may also be influenced by the style of your windows. If you have intricate windows, for example, if they feature lead, Georgian bars, stained glass, or frosting, you may prefer larger slats with bigger gaps. These will showcase your beautiful windows whilst preventing them from looking too 'busy'.
To Rod Or Not To Rod
Window shutters are available with or without tilt rods. Our customers often find that shutters with smaller louvres look even better when they feature a tilt rod.
You can also have a tilt rod with larger slats; however, many people prefer the simple, clean look that you get without a rod.
