Plantation Shutters FAQ

  1. What are plantation shutters?

Plantation Shutters are the ‘formal’ term for interior shutters. They originate from cotton or sugar plantation fields, most commonly on the exterior of homes, used to control light and heat.

Today, they’ve evolved to be a modern, trendy window covering that still offer those same benefits but now incorporate into modern living.

Read more in our comprehensive guide to plantation shutters.

  2. Why should I get plantation shutters?

A few reasons. They’re desirable, practical, have a huge array of benefits like heat reduction, privacy, and longevity, all of which translates to an increase in the value of your home.

But mostly because they look great and people appreciate how well they fit into almost any home decor. They certainly do give off that “WOW” factor.

  3. How much do plantation shutters cost?

Costs vary from material to material and overall window size. But also, other factors like colour and customer choice in specification.

There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ for shutters, and this is indicative of the costing. They’re bespoke and need a bespoke price. That said, generally these days – depending on what area of the UK you could be in, anywhere from £250 – £350 per metre squared.

Read more in our post about the cost of plantation shutters.

  4. What do I need to know before purchasing window shutters?

They’re a lifetime purchase. Are they right for you, right now? Do you have renovation plans in a year or two? Are you planning to change your windows down the line?

Once fitted, we don’t recommend removing them. Not only is it a costly decision, not always can be save the product. Any renovation works needs to be completed finished before ordering, ie. plastering, changing of window boards etc and any tiling work around reveals.

  5. I have awkward shaped windows; can I still have shutters?

Absolutely! We can manufacture a shutter for almost any shaped window. From circles, to triangles, arches and even hex windows.

  6. What are my options for plantation shutters?

Many. 5 louvre sizes, over 5 different material types, over 50 colours to choose from. Whilst 95% of our average client base has the same interior shutter, there are many options we can discuss if you’d like something more bespoke.

  7. What material should I choose for my shutters?

Where is the shutter going? Kitchen? Living room? Bathroom? Is the home a high traffic home? Are there young children? Pets? These are factors we take into consideration when helping you decide on what material is best for you, for you to get the most longevity from your product.

  8. Can I fit my shutters myself?

Technically you can, but we strongly discourage it. The quality of finish comes from the pros and the margin for error is high, so it’s likely to be a false economy. Let us take care of the worry of a potential costly mis-measure, and ensure a professional finish that will last. We know what works to give you the best possible look for years to come.

  9. Why should I buy from Shuttertec?

Experience. We’ve been in the shutters industry for over 15 years. We work with the best suppliers to give you the outcome you desire and what will last. We offer neutral advice, because we care. Over 130 5* reviews from our clients (which we’re proud of!) should give you a true picture that we value our customers, and we’re here to stay. We want each and every client to have the best possible outcome when using our service – because that’s what matters.

Simply put: We want what’s best for you. And because we work with a variety of different manufacturers, we’re able to look at your situation and offer guidance on what we believe would be the best for your home and works with your lifestyle.

  10. How to care for window shutters

Simply wipe with a damp cloth or dust with a plump feather duster. Plantation shutters require little-to-no maintenance from the end user, will never require any repainting and refinishing. They are low maintenance, and just require general upkeep as you would from any other furniture item in your home.

  11. What is the lead time for shutters?

There are now a few UK shutter options, and with those our lead times can start from 2 weeks. Standard wooden shutters come from abroad and are typically around 10 weeks – so you may need to factor this into your schedule of works, or if you’re moving home. We do offer an express service which means we can express your wooden shutters in around 3-4 weeks as well.
